Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't you use the term recovery?

Established alcohol support groups view sobriety through the prism of recovery. We want to move beyond the recovery narrative and prefer to think of our low-and-no-alcohol adventures as journeys of discovery.

BUT ISN'T ADDICTION A DISEASE OVER WHICH WE ARE POWERLESS?

Alcohol is a highly addictive drug that anyone can get addicted to, particularly those that have suffered trauma in early life. We believe addiction is a learned behaviour influenced by personal suffering. If something can be learnt it's possible to be unlearnt.

Do you refer to yourselves as alcoholics?

Most of us don’t. We are former drinkers who decided to stop drinking, or in some cases to moderate. Whilst we respect that many former drinkers do feel comfortable referring to themselves (and being referred to) as alcoholics, we shy away from using such labels. For many ex-drinkers, labels like alcoholic can be stigmatising and imply that one is powerless to affect change in their lives.

What if I don't have a heavy drinking problem?

We are an inclusive tribe and welcome anyone who wants to change their relationship with alcohol. We make no distinction between those wanting to avoid weekend hangovers and those who’ve been drinking heavily on a daily basis.

What if I am LOOKING TO AVOID drugs other than alcohol?

That's fine too. You're more than welcome to join us!

Won't life be boring and/or scary without alcohol?

Give it a try and see! Children don't need alcohol to relax and have fun. Nor should we. It can be scary at first, especially if you are going it alone. It's much easier when you are part of a community of like-minded individuals.

Is there a price for membership?

We are a not-for-profit organisation and try to keep charges to a minimum. There may be a small charge for event admission. This is to cover the cost of hiring event spaces and for promotional costs.

WHERE AND WHEN ARE YOUR MEETUPS HELD?

Our meetups are held at exciting venues such as boutique cafés and bars with a good selection of alcohol-free drinks. We try to schedule events for the evening and weekend so people working regular hours aren't left feeling excluded.

Do I need to commit to living an alcohol free life?

That's up to you! If moderation is your thing that's absolutely fine. Most of us have chosen not to drink but we welcome mindful drinkers and sober curious alike.

Are your DISCUSSION GROUPS facilitated?

Meetups are hosted by one or more of our members but there is no hierarchy. All members are equal.

What if I am a member of another organisation?

We are collaborative and welcome members from other groups. If you are a member of a 12 step programme you are welcome to join us, but please refrain from promoting 12 step groups at our events.
